Living in Idaho Falls: a local guide from Ali and Josh
Idaho Falls sits right on the Snake River in Bonneville County, with the River Walk running along both banks through town. We live and work in East Idaho, and we spend a lot of our time in Idaho Falls with clients. Here's a quick look at the basics we get asked about most.
Where it is and getting around
From central Idaho Falls, Blackfoot is about 30 minutes away (about 29 miles), Rexburg is about 35 minutes (about 28 miles) and Pocatello is about 55 minutes (about 53 miles). Jackson, Wyoming is about 2 hours away (about 89 miles), which makes Idaho Falls a handy base for weekend trips toward the Tetons. Drive times are rough estimates for normal conditions; winter weather can add time. If you'll be commuting, try the drive at the time of day you'd actually make it before you commit to a home.
Schools
Two public school districts serve Idaho Falls addresses: Idaho Falls School District 91 and Bonneville Joint School District 93. On the state's Idaho Report Card, District 91's high schools include Idaho Falls Senior High School, Skyline Senior High School, Compass Academy and Emerson High School. Bonneville Joint District 93 also runs schools with Idaho Falls addresses, including Bonneville High School and Lincoln High School. District lines don't follow city limits, so it's worth confirming the district for a specific address before you buy. You can look up enrollment, programs and contact details for any Idaho public school on the Idaho Report Card, from the Idaho Department of Education.
Parks, outdoors and community
The River Walk covers about 5 miles on both sides of the Snake River, right through town. It's the spot for an evening walk, a run or just watching the falls.
The Idaho Falls Zoo is inside Tautphaus Park and is run by the city's Parks and Recreation Department. It's home to just over 300 animals from about 130 species, and it was the first zoo in Idaho accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Day trips are easy from here. The Menan Buttes, managed by the BLM, are two of the world's largest tuff cones, and the North Butte has a trail to the summit. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes cover 10,600 acres of white quartz sand about 8 miles west of St. Anthony.
Homes in Idaho Falls
For a feel of prices, start with the Bonneville County snapshot above. It covers the whole county, not just the city, so it's a starting point rather than a price for any one street. If you have a neighborhood in mind, we can pull recent sales nearby and walk you through what they mean for you. Whatever you buy, a few questions are worth asking early: how old the roof, furnace and water heater are, whether the home is on city water and sewer or a private well and septic system, and how the street or driveway is cleared in winter. We'll help you get those answers before you write an offer.
