Living in Blackfoot: a local guide from Ali and Josh
Josh was born and raised in Blackfoot, so we know this town well. Blackfoot is in Bingham County, about halfway between Idaho Falls and Pocatello, and it's home to the Eastern Idaho State Fair and the Idaho Potato Museum. Here's a quick local look.
Where it is and getting around
From the center of Blackfoot, Idaho Falls is about 30 minutes away (about 28 miles) and Pocatello is about 30 minutes (about 26 miles). With both cities that close, a lot of folks here commute one way or the other. Drive times are rough estimates for normal conditions; winter weather can add time. If you'll be commuting, try the drive at the time of day you'd actually make it before you commit to a home.
Schools
Blackfoot is in Blackfoot School District 55. The state's Idaho Report Card lists Blackfoot High School, Mountain View Middle School and several elementary schools with Blackfoot addresses, including Donald D Stalker, Ridge Crest, Riverbend, Groveland and Wapello. The district also lists an online junior/senior school. District lines don't always match city limits, so confirm the district for a specific address. You can look up enrollment, programs and contact details for any Idaho public school on the Idaho Report Card, from the Idaho Department of Education.
Parks, outdoors and community
The Idaho Potato Museum is in the old Oregon Short Line Railroad Depot at 130 NW Main St. in downtown Blackfoot.
The Eastern Idaho State Fair is based in Blackfoot, with its office at 97 Park Street.
The Greater Blackfoot Area Greenbelt is a paved, multiuse trail of about 6.5 miles. The city's greenbelt brochure says it connects Blackfoot, Rose and the neighborhoods in between to public parks, the Snake River and other recreation sites, including Jensen Grove Park.
Homes in Blackfoot
For a quick feel of the market, look at the Bingham County snapshot above. It covers the whole county (including Shelley), so it's a starting point, not a Blackfoot-only price. Tell us what you're looking for and we'll pull recent sales for the streets and areas you care about. Whatever you buy, a few questions are worth asking early: how old the roof, furnace and water heater are, whether the home is on city water and sewer or a private well and septic system, and how the street or driveway is cleared in winter. We'll help you get those answers before you write an offer.
