Living in Swan Valley: a local guide from Ali and Josh
Swan Valley is a small town in Bonneville County along Highway 26. Palisades Dam and the start of the South Fork of the Snake River are right here, and Jackson, Wyoming is about an hour away. Here's a quick local look.
Where it is and getting around
From Swan Valley, Driggs is about 40 minutes away (about 29 miles), Idaho Falls is about 55 minutes (about 44 miles) and Jackson, Wyoming is about 1 hour 5 minutes (about 46 miles). Drive times are rough estimates for normal conditions; winter weather can add time. If you'll be commuting, try the drive at the time of day you'd actually make it before you commit to a home.
Schools
Swan Valley is served by Swan Valley School District 92, which runs one school, Swan Valley Elementary School in Irwin, for grades K–8. The district says its high school students are bused to Ririe High School, in Ririe Joint School District 252. Check with the district about transportation for a specific address. You can look up enrollment, programs and contact details for any Idaho public school on the Idaho Report Card, from the Idaho Department of Education.
Parks, outdoors and community
The South Fork of the Snake River flows northwest from Palisades Dam in Swan Valley. For the first nine miles it runs through a narrow channel, then widens around several island complexes, according to the BLM.
Palisades Reservoir has about 70 miles of shoreline, five campgrounds, five picnic areas and six boat ramps, managed for recreation by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
The BLM notes a waterfall just upstream from the Swan Valley Bridge, where Fall Creek cascades into the river.
Homes in Swan Valley
The Bonneville County snapshot above covers the whole county, and most of those sales are in Idaho Falls and Ammon, so use it as background, not a Swan Valley price. Sales here can be few and far between. Tell us what you're after, and we'll pull the recent valley sales that really compare. Whatever you buy, a few questions are worth asking early: how old the roof, furnace and water heater are, whether the home is on city water and sewer or a private well and septic system, and how the street or driveway is cleared in winter. We'll help you get those answers before you write an offer.
